Hot take: the guy at the trailhead in Bend said my carb was running lean and I ignored him for 2 months
Ran into this older fella at the Wanoga staging area back in January who listened to my 400EX idle for about 10 seconds and said the carb was running lean. I blew it off cause the quad started fine all winter. Well, last weekend it started bogging bad on the hills and sure enough, pulled the plug and it was white as a ghost. Cost me a top end rebuild over a $4 jet. Anybody else got a story about ignoring good advice from a stranger at the trailhead?
Had the exact same thing happen with my 2006 TRX450 at Sand Lake. Some guy in the parking lot told me my jetting was off for the coastal air and I just nodded and rode anyway. Two trips later it was popping and losing power on the dunes, plug was chalk white. I ended up going up two sizes on the main and it ran perfect after that. Now I actually write down what guys tell me at the trailhead, cause that old dude at Wanoga was probably right too.
