That 2am moon stack almost ruined my hard drive in Nashville

I shot 400 raw frames of a lunar eclipse and tried stacking them straight out of the camera, which ate 90GB and froze my PC twice. The shortcut was converting to 16-bit TIFFs first after tossing every miss, that cut the file size by 60% and the stack finished in 6 minutes. Has anyone else hit a memory wall with big lunar sequences?

Yeah I learned that one the hard way too, raw stacking is brutal. Converting first is the move, saves so much headache.
