Showerthought: a kid at the Grand Rapids observatory asked why the moon photo looked 'blurry gray' and it hit me
Last Friday I volunteered at the Grand Rapids public telescope night and this 9 year old looked at my shot of the moon and just said 'why is it so blurry gray.' I realized I had been stacking 40 frames in Registax but never checked my focus on the live view before recording, so every photo I brought had that same soft look. Does anyone else check focus on a bright star first or do you just trust the moon on the screen?
Checked focus on a bright star every single time after wrecking a whole night of Jupiter shots last year. The moon looks fine even when it's slightly off because it's so big and bright, so your eyes just can't tell on the screen. A star will show you that soft blob right away, then you know to dial it in before you hit record. Trusting the moon on live view is exactly how you end up with 40 frames of mush stacked into slightly sharper mush. Waste five minutes on a star first and save yourself the whole session.
