Rant: I still shoot the moon at 1/125 handheld because a guy in Tacoma told me to in 2019
I used to baby my setup so hard for lunar shots. Tripod, 10 second delay, remote shutter, the whole thing, and I would drive out to a dark spot off Highway 16 near Gig Harbor just to get away from yard lights. Then a retired photographer at a star party in Tacoma watched me fiddle with my rig for 40 minutes and said the moon is just a big bright rock, shoot it like one. I tried his way that night, handheld at 1/125 and f/8, and got the sharpest crater detail I have ever pulled. Now I do the same thing from my own driveway with porch lights on, no tripod, no timer, done in 5 minutes. People online act like you need a $900 mount for the moon and I think that advice keeps beginners from ever trying. The moon is the one target that forgives sloppy hands because it is so stinking bright. Anyone here still lugging a tripod out for a full moon, or did you all figure this out a lot faster than me?
Man that Tacoma guy sounds like he saved you years of hassle. I was that person hauling my tripod out at midnight, freezing my fingers off for a full moon shot, and feeling dumb about it after. Good to know I'm not the only one who took forever to figure out that the moon doesn't care about your setup lol.
