Last week I finally understood why my astro photos looked so flat compared to others
I've been taking pictures of the night sky for about 5 years now, mostly with a DSLR and a tracking mount. Last Tuesday I was out at a dark site near Flagstaff, Arizona, and I got a really clear shot of the Andromeda Galaxy. I loaded it into my editing software like usual and started stretching the histogram, but it still looked dull and washed out. I've tried reading tutorials online but nothing clicked. Then I remembered a guy at a star party last month mentioned using a gradient removal tool before stretching. I gave it a try and the difference was huge. The galaxy popped out with so much more detail. Has anyone else struggled with this and found a step that changed everything for them?

Get that a lot, it's like when you finally clean your windshield and realize you were missing half the road the whole time. We spend so much energy on the big moves but the little prep steps are usually what makes everything work.

Those 30 minutes watching a gradient removal tutorial completely changed my editing workflow too, it's wild how such a simple step makes the whole galaxy pop like that.
