I used to think those cheap phone telescope adapters were a good deal, but I just wasted $40 on one that blurred every single shot of the Orion Nebula.
The plastic mount wobbled so much that even a 10-second exposure at 400 ISO came out completely unusable, so what's a decent budget option for attaching a smartphone to an eyepiece without breaking the bank?

Check out the used market for old DSLR camera mounts, the metal ones from brands like Orion or Celestron. Those things are built like tanks compared to the new plastic junk, and you can often find them for the same price as a cheap adapter. Just make sure the thread size matches your eyepiece, which is the only tricky part. The extra weight might even help steady the whole setup on the telescope.

Built like tanks" is a strong claim. How much extra weight are we talking, and does it ever cause balance issues on smaller scopes?
