I thought my cheap 50mm lens couldn't shoot the Milky Way, then a guy in Tucson showed me one frame
Two weeks ago I was ready to drop $400 on a wide lens because my $99 50mm kept giving me noisy, trailed shots of the Milky Way from my backyard near Phoenix. A guy at the Tucson astro meetup told me to stop pushing ISO 6400 and just stack 20 shots at f/2.8 and 8 seconds each, and when I tried it that night the core came out cleaner than anything I'd gotten before. Now I'm wondering if I should sell the wide lens fund and put it toward a star tracker instead, has anyone here made that same call?
Man, it's a $99 lens and you got one decent shot, that's not exactly a reason to overhaul your whole setup. Shoot it like that for a few months first and see if stacking is still working for you before you go buying a tracker.
