Gave up my DSLR for a cheap webcam on the scope, and I still miss the old shots
Back in 2019 I was hauling out my old Canon and doing 30 second subs by hand, and it took me almost two hours just to get one decent shot of the Orion Nebula. Last winter I finally switched to a $60 webcam strapped to the eyepiece, and stacking software made it so easy I got a better image in 15 minutes from my driveway in Boise. But here's the thing, those noisy old frames had a look I can't get anymore, all grainy and personal, and the new stuff almost looks like everyone else's pics. I keep both folders open on my laptop sometimes just to compare. Anyone else go back to the hard way on purpose, or am I just being sentimental about bad photos?
That bit about "a look I can't get anymore, all grainy and personal" really hits home. A buddy of mine went through the same thing last year, sold his fancy auto-guider setup and started shooting with just a tripod and a beat up T3i again. His wife thought he lost his mind, but he told me the fussy part is the point, standing out there freezing while you nudge the mount by hand makes you feel like you earned the shot. His new pics have star trails and weird color and he loves them more than anything he got with the gear that did all the work. Half of them are honestly kind of bad and he frames them anyway.
