The before and after of my classroom's reading corner was insane after 4 months
Started with this sad little shelf of beat up books nobody touched, then I rearranged them by color (not genre, I know) and added a beanbag chair from Facebook Marketplace for $15 and suddenly kids are fighting over who sits there. Anyone else seen that kind of shift with just one tiny change to something?

Literally rearranging the books by color is genius. Kids are visual creatures and a rainbow shelf just screams "pick me up" compared to a mess of boring spines. That $15 beanbag chair is probably doing more work than a whole library renovation. Color coding is totally the way to go, even if the librarians hate it.

Start with taping a color wheel to the bookshelf for a week so kids can match books to the right spot without thinking. @karenw90 is right that a rainbow shelf makes books feel like toys instead of homework. The beanbag chair trick works because it turns reading into a physical thing kids want to do. Just use simple tape labels on the spine like red, blue, green so kids can put them back. If librarians complain, tell them you tested it and circulation went up by 30% in two weeks. Color coding is basically free advertising for the whole library collection.
