That clerk at a gas station in rural Nebraska gave me the best life advice I ever got

I was driving through a town called Gothenburg back in 2018 and stopped for gas. The old guy behind the counter saw my out-of-state plates and asked where I was headed. He said 'don't plan too far ahead, just follow the road and you'll end up where you need to be.' That stuck with me way more than any map or GPS ever did. Has anyone else had a random stranger say something that totally shifted how you think?

Man, I wish I'd heard that before I drove three hours out of my way chasing a "shortcut" my GPS swore was real. These days my sense of direction is so bad I could get lost in a parking lot, so that counter guy's wisdom would have saved me a tank of gas and a lot of embarrassment. Guess I'll just keep following the road straight into another detour, as usual.

Putting the phone away and looking at the sun actually helped me when I got turned around. Maybe trying to notice landmarks along the way would keep you from going too far off track.
