Saw a stranger's luggage tag trick at O'Hare and it fixed my lost bag panic

I was stuck at gate B12 last Tuesday watching a guy wrap a bright green strap around his suitcase handle and write his phone number on it with a permanent marker, and after my own bag vanished on a Denver layover in 2019, I now do the same thing and have had zero lost bags since, has anyone else found a cheap travel hack that actually works?
