Random chat with a librarian at the Des Moines coffee shop changed how I look at book banning
She told me a parent pulled 47 books from the kids section last year over a single page about gay penguins, and it hit different because she showed me the actual list and half were about civil rights.

Started going through my own kid's school library list after that. Found out the "controversial" books were mostly about kids with different families or dealing with racism. The stuff that actually gets pulled is never just about gay penguins, it's always tied to bigger topics someone doesn't want kids to see. My kid read one of those challenged books about Ruby Bridges and came home asking me why people were so mean back then. That's exactly the kind of conversation they're trying to prevent.

Took my kid to the library and same deal, the "scary" books were just about families that look different than ours.
