PSA: a guy at the gym told me my deadlift setup was wrong and it fixed 3 months of back pain
I've been lifting at a small gym in Columbus for about two years and kept getting this dull ache in my lower back after heavy days. A guy who trains there, older dude in his 50s who never says much, watched me set up and said flat out "your bar is way out in front of your shins, you're pulling it around your knees." I was annoyed at first because I thought my setup looked fine in the mirror. But I went home and filmed myself from the side, and he was right, the bar was probably 2 inches forward of where it should be. I spent the next four weeks just drilling the start position with an empty bar, pushing my shins to the bar and getting my hips set before every rep. Last Tuesday I pulled 275 for a clean triple with zero back tightness after, which hasn't happened in months. It's such a dumb small thing but nobody ever told me, and honestly I never filmed myself so I never saw it. Has anyone else had a random person at the gym point out one tiny cue that changed a lift for them?
