I used to think digital piano keyboards were just toys until I played a Roland FP-30X last weekend

For years I told myself that if you want to learn real piano, you need an acoustic upright with weighted keys and hammers. My daughter wanted to start lessons but we live in a small apartment, so a real piano was out of the question. A friend at work kept telling me to try a digital stage piano, said the action was close enough. I went to a Guitar Center in Austin and spent 20 minutes on that Roland. The graded hammer action feels surprisingly heavy, and the escapement simulation actually makes the keys feel like they have that little click at the bottom. Now I am wondering if I have been wrong this whole time. Does anyone else think digital pianos have finally gotten good enough to replace acoustic instruments for beginners, or am I just fooling myself?

I grabbed a Casio Privia PX-160 for my son last year when we were in the same boat with a tiny apartment. After six months of daily practice he played his first recital on a Steinway and he adapted to the heavier action just fine. For learning basics and building finger strength those digital pianos work way better than I ever gave them credit for.

Man it's SO TRUE @the_seth, those digital pianos really surprise you with how well they build proper technique.
