I finally figured out I was slicing onions wrong for 20 years

I always sliced onions root to tip and ended up with a crying mess every time. Then last month at a friend's house, she showed me cutting parallel to the root instead of through it. Turns out leaving the root intact keeps the tear gas stuff inside the onion. I tried it the next day and barely shed a tear. Has anyone else had a basic kitchen skill they did backwards for way too long?

Try cutting the root last, leaves the most intact for easier dicing.

Oh man, @anthony_fox90 you absolutely nailed it with that tip. I used to cut the root first and it was a total mess, bits flying everywhere and half the onion falling apart on me. Then I saw someone mention this trick online and tried it out - it's like a totally different experience. The layers stay stacked nicely and you can get those nice even dice without fighting the onion the whole time. I swear it saves me like five minutes of cleanup too since there's less stray pieces. Honestly feels like one of those kitchen secrets nobody tells you about until you stumble on it.
