The volunteer at a dig near Abilene handed me a toothbrush and changed how I see field work
Two summers ago at a small site outside Abilene, a retired teacher volunteering with our crew handed me a toothbrush and told me to clean a pottery sherd for an hour instead of reaching for the hose. She was right, because the hose would have washed away the grain marks that later helped us date the layer. How many of you have had a field vet push a slower method on you that ended up saving the find?
