Spent $80 on a so-called 'metal detector' off Amazon and it couldn't find a soda can 6 inches deep

I bought this cheap detector thinking I could start finding old coins and relics around my local park. Got it in the mail last week, took it out for a test, and the thing just beeped at every rock and piece of trash. Couldn't even pick up a buried pop can I used as a test target. Total waste of cash, should have just saved up for a Garrett or something real. Anyone here ever get burned by one of those cheap Amazon detectors?

Yeah that "on/off switch" thing sounds about right, mine did the exact same junk.

Read somewhere that those cheap ones basically just have a on/off switch inside, no real discrimination circuitry. Sounds like you got the same knockoff everyone runs into.
