Rant: My pile of hand-drawn site maps feels ancient next to the new software

When I started, we mapped digs with pencils and measuring tapes. Now, everyone uses GPS and apps to plot points in minutes. I still have my old maps because they show all the guesswork and effort. Our latest scan of a Roman fort was fast, but it doesn't feel the same.

My grandma's box of letters has that same feeling, all ink and paper folds. Email chains just don't hold the weight.

Remember when we developed film and held the actual photo? My kids will never know that weird magic, just deleting bad shots instantly. Something honest gets lost when the work is too clean.

Totally get that feeling, like my whole camera roll is just a pile of mistakes I can erase. I still have a shoebox of blurry film prints from high school that are objectively terrible, but throwing them out feels wrong. It's like what @julia843 said about the letters, the mess is part of the story. My digital life is way too tidy to feel real.
