My dig team just hit 500 artifacts at the site, and the number threw me.

We're working a small site in southern Utah, and I was sure we'd find maybe 200 pieces total. Yesterday, the count passed 500, mostly pottery shards and stone tools. Some folks think it means a bigger, more permanent settlement than we guessed, while others argue it's just a really good trash dump from a passing group. What's your take on a high artifact count changing the story of a place?

Honestly, hitting 500 artifacts in southern Utah is wild when you were expecting 200. Tbh, that kind of count has to mean something, right? It feels like more than just a camp spot. I'd lean towards it being a bigger settlement, because that's a lot of stuff to just leave behind while passing through.

Used to think small, but 500 pieces says people stayed.
