Just realized I spent $200 on a metal detector for nothing

I bought a cheap metal detector off Craigslist last summer for $200 thinking I'd find old coins in my backyard. After 3 weekends of digging up nothing but bottle caps and rusty nails, I gave up and threw it in the shed. Then last week I saw a post in this group about how you need to research your site first, not just swing it around randomly. I never checked soil maps or old property records, just went in blind. Has anyone else wasted cash on a detector before they figured out the prep work?

Hang on @angela_coleman has a point about the bottle caps but here's a different take - maybe the real waste was the time, not the detector itself. You probably learned more about reading land in those 3 weekends than any YouTube video could teach you. What kind of soil or terrain did you end up digging in?

Right, because obviously the universe was saving all the silver dollars for someone who actually did their homework first. At least you've got a great magnet for bottle caps now.
