I walked the old Roman road near my town and saw something I'd missed before.

I always thought it was just a worn-down path, but looking closer, I spotted a clear cart rut cut right into the bedrock. It made me realize how much traffic must have passed through here. Has anyone else found a simple detail that changed how you saw a site?

Wait, didn't they use pack animals a lot on those roads too? I've read that a lot of the deep ruts we see are from iron-rimmed wheels over centuries, not just from a huge amount of single trips. It sort of spreads the wear out over a much longer time.

Visiting Hadrian's Wall, I finally noticed the tiny chisel marks on a single stone. That showed me it was shaped by one person's hands, not just some big ancient machine. It totally flipped my view of the place from a giant wall to a real human project.

That's a great point, @thomas_young, it makes you wonder about the person who made those marks.
