Had to choose between two dig sites for my first field school and I'm still thinking about it
Honestly, I had to pick between a Roman villa site in southern France or a pre-Incan settlement in Peru. Both were 6 week programs, but the Peru trip cost $800 more for the flight. I went with France because it was closer and I thought Roman stuff would be easier to start with. Tbh, we found some amazing mosaic floors, but the whole time I kept seeing the Peru team's photos of these crazy terraced structures they were uncovering. They found a burial site with intact textiles in week 3, and we were mostly just mapping wall lines. Ngl, I'm happy with what I learned, but I feel like I missed out on a once in a lifetime find. Has anyone else picked the 'safe' option on a dig and regretted it later?

Haunting you for years feels a bit strong. You got to work a real Roman site and see mosaics come out of the ground. That's not exactly a boring backup plan. I've passed on a few things for easier options and never beat myself up. The Peru dig sounds cool, but you still got the skills. Next time you'll pick the wild one.
