That stump grinder job that turned into a 9 hour battle

Last spring I took on a big maple stump out in Beaverton that I figured would take maybe two hours. The stump was wider than the grinder's wheel and the roots had wrapped around an old sprinkler line and a buried cable. I spent the first hour just digging out rocks that kept kicking back and dulling the teeth. Then the grinder jammed up on a knot so hard I had to pull the belt and reset it twice. By hour six I was hand sawing roots with a pruning blade because the grinder kept overheating. I finally finished at dark and my back was shot for two days. Has anyone else ever had a stump that looked easy but just fought you the whole way? What do you do when the machine clearly isnt enough for the job?

Ngl, my last "quick" stump turned into me eating aspirin in the dark and questioning every life choice that led to owning a grinder. The machine wins sometimes, and so does the stump.
