Shoutout to the guy in Tulsa who told me to stop staking my transplants so tight
I planted 12 autumn blaze maples last spring and staked them all with two tight straps like I always do, then a retired arborist in Tulsa told me to loosen them and pull the stakes after one season. Nine months later the tight ones are growing slower and have bark marks, while the loose ones are already thicker at the base. How long do you all leave stakes on new maples?
Two tight straps and some bark marks sounds like normal tree stuff to me, not some big disaster. Unless the trunk is actually choking or the tree is tipping over, I would not stress about it. I usually pull stakes after a year and call it done.
