Rented a stump grinder last saturday and lost a whole day to a dumb mistake

Booked a 14 inch Vermeer from Sunbelt in Fresno for $280 for the day. Forgot to check the grease fittings before I started and it seized up after 3 stumps. Spent 4 hours waiting for a replacement, shoulda just hired a guy for the same money and saved my back.

Yeah, "shoulda just hired a guy" is exactly what I told myself after the same kind of mess. Last spring I rented a brush chipper from the same place and the safety switch kept killing the engine every five minutes. Turns out the last guy who rented it had jammed a stick in there to bypass a sensor, and it took me and the shop guy two hours on the phone to figure it out. By the time I got it running, it was almost dark and I only got halfway through the pile I'd been saving for months. I paid damn near $300 for that headache too, and my back was shot for two days after. I still have that pile out back, and every time I look at it, I think about just paying someone next time.
