My buddy in Tacoma said he never spikes a tree under 30 inches...

We were talking about a big silver maple removal and he just flat out said it's lazy and leaves wounds that never really close right. It made me look at my own spurs and think about all the smaller jobs where I maybe didn't need them. Do you guys have a hard size rule for when you'll spike a tree or is it all about the situation?

Is it really that big of a deal though? I see guys get so worked up about spurs on small trees. We're talking about removals, not pruning. That maple is coming down either way. Sure, maybe a 10 inch pine doesn't need it, but a 24 inch silver maple with a bad lean? I'm spiking up. The tree is firewood in an hour, who cares about the wound closure?

Who cares about the wound closure" is exactly the kind of thinking that gets ground guys like @thead44 hurt. A tree that's already compromised with a bad lean doesn't need extra weak spots from spur holes right where the trunk could snap. I get the time pressure but that extra minute to set a line could save a hospital trip.
