My brand new climbing rope got a core shot on a simple removal
It happened yesterday on a routine silver maple takedown in Akron. The rope ran over a tiny, sharp stub I missed, and now there's a 3-inch section where the core is exposed. What's your go-to method for inspecting gear after a close call like this?

How gutting is that, what's your usual check for sheath damage?

Check the stitching alongside the stress points too, not just the leather itself. @ellis.charles I had a sheath fail where the thread gave way on the belt loop AFTER the leather looked fine under a lamp. The stress from everyday wear can stretch those holes out slowly until the whole thing separates. Some people forget the hardware and the stitching takes just as much abuse as the leather. That's why I always run my thumb along every seam now and tug on the belt slots before each ride.

The last sheath I had to scrap was a brand new 80-dollar one from a show in Lexington. Found a hairline crack along the throat after the first real use. It was so fine you could only see it with a light behind it. That kind of thing makes you check every single inch under a lamp now.
