Lost $400 on a bad stump grinder rental last month

Rented a Vermeer SC252 for a weekend job and the hydraulic system blew seals after about 3 hours of use. The rental place blamed me for improper operation, so now I'm out the rental fee plus a damage deposit. Has anyone else had luck fighting those kinds of charges?

Honestly, I read somewhere that rental places pull that stunt all the time.

Hard disagree with @thead44 on this one. Rental places are in the business of renting equipment, not scamming people out of deposits. I've rented stump grinders maybe half a dozen times and never once had a hydraulic seal blow unless I hit something I shouldn't have. Vermeer makes tough machines. If the seals let go that fast, it was likely from hitting a buried rock or root that stressed the system past its limits. A simple phone call to ask about proper operation before you started could have saved you this headache.
