Just realized the city park in Springfield butchered their pin oaks
Honestly, I walked through there yesterday and every single one got topped. They're just these sad, flat stumps now. Has anyone else seen this kind of hack job in a public space lately?

My arborist friend says topping is sometimes needed for power line clearance.

Oh sure, let's just give every tree a bad haircut.

Wait, isn't that the tree version of saying a doctor needs to chop off a leg for a hangnail? My buddy Mark had this huge oak in his backyard, and the power company came by and topped it way back for clearance. Looked like a sad broomstick for years, all those weak suckers growing back. Plus, the tree got all stressed and got this bad rot in the trunk, had to come down completely five years later. That arborist friend might mean well, but there's usually better ways like directional pruning or even moving the line. Wouldn't a little extra planning save that tree from a slow death?
