Just found out most root flares are buried too deep from the nursery

Read a study from the U of Minnesota that said over 80% of newly planted trees have root flares covered by soil or mulch. Have you guys been seeing this in your service calls too?

Been seeing it on damn near every job that involves older trees. Makes you wonder if these nurseries are just lazy or if there's some other reason they bury them deep. You ever find trees that actually die from a buried root flare or does it just make them struggle for years?

Oh man @julia286 this is such a frustrating thing to see. Nurseries do it because it's cheaper and faster to pot them that way, but they're not thinking about the tree's long term health. I've definitely found trees that slowly suffocate from a buried root flare, they'll struggle for years then just give up. It's not always instant death but it makes them weak and vulnerable to disease. Lazy is the word for it, no other reason makes sense.
