I used to think a 3/4 inch rope was fine for everything... until a big oak limb in Springfield showed me otherwise.

Yeah, that's a solid point about gear not being the only factor. But @noahchen, sometimes the rope itself is the real problem. A 3/4 inch line might handle a lot, but a green oak limb is a whole different kind of heavy. It's not just about knot skill, it's about the rope's working load limit. Using a line too light for the job is asking for trouble, even with a perfect bowline.

Bet that rope was fine, you just tied a bad knot. Seen plenty of guys blame their gear for their own mistakes.
