The floppy drive on my 1993 Packard Bell finally spins again after I cleaned the heads with a cotton swab and some isopropyl.
It took three tries and a lot of patience, but hearing that familiar whirr and actually reading a disk felt like a tiny victory.

pipera50 nailed it with that 'historical artifact' bit, I bet @jennifer_west's ancient dust theory is spot on too."
What made you finally open it up after all these years - the nostalgia or something specific you needed off that disk?

That 1993 Packard Bell must have some ancient dust in it.

Seriously, that thing is still running? The dust in there is probably older than some of the people on this site. That's not just dust, it's a historical artifact. You could probably find a fossilized Cheeto in the fan.
