PSA: recap your old Commodore power supply before it cooks your board, mine almost did
Fired up my C64 in the garage last Thursday to play some Maniac Mansion and about 5 minutes in the screen went all wavy and the smell hit me, that hot plastic and fish smell. I yanked the plug and popped the case open and the big filter cap in the brick was bulging with gunk leaking out the top. The 5 volt line was putting out almost 6.4 volts, which is way past what the chips want, and I got lucky it didn't kill the SID. Ordered a modern replacement brick for 38 bucks and I'm never plugging the stock one in again. If you're running original gear, check the voltage before you power up, has anyone here had one fail this bad or did I just get lucky?
