My grandpa's 1979 Panasonic cassette deck still works, his repair advice did not

He told me to clean the pinch rollers with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab, so I did that for 20 minutes and the tape still sounded wobbly. Turns out the belt inside had turned to goo, a $4 replacement from an eBay seller in Ohio fixed it. Has anyone else had a relative's old-school tip send them down the wrong path?
