My Apple IIe power supply fix turned into a two month project

Thought it was a bad capacitor, but the issue was a cracked trace under the board I only found after checking every connection twice. Anyone else have a repair that snowballed like this?

Watched my buddy try to fix a flickering Game Gear screen. He replaced every capacitor, ordered a new screen, the whole deal. Turns out the power switch was just full of old soda gunk. He spent weeks and like eighty bucks before he cleaned the stupid switch.

My cousin's PS4 kept overheating... he replaced the thermal paste twice before we found a Lego minifigure stuck in the fan vent.

Oh man, that totally reminds me of my friend's VCR nightmare. He was convinced the whole tape transport was shot, bought a donor unit, spent a whole weekend swapping parts. The thing just would NOT take a tape. @nancy275's story about the soda in the switch is spot on, because it turned out to be a single, tiny broken plastic tooth on the loading gear. A piece that cost like two cents, buried under everything he'd already replaced. The simplest thing always seems to be the last place you look.
