Just realized you should NOT recap every cap in a 1987 Mac SE power supply
I was in my garage in Boise at 11pm with my SE dead on the bench, and I recapped all 14 electrolytics hoping to fix the floppy eject, but it just made the +5V rail drift. Everyone online says recap first, but I think that's wrong for SEs that still boot, so what do you actually check before touching the solder iron?
My buddy Doug in Nampa had the same thing happen with his SE/30 last spring. He read one forum thread that said recap everything and went at it with a $12 iron from Harbor Freight at like 1am. Two pads lifted, one trace got nicked, and the thing that was actually broken was just the PRAM battery leaking onto the board. He spent three weeks chasing a problem he made worse. Check the battery first, then look at the analog board for cold joints, only recap if the caps are actually bulging or leaking.
