Just realized my old VCR wasn't broken, I was using the wrong tape type

Last week I was ready to junk a VCR I got from a garage sale in Boise, convinced the heads were shot because every tape looked terrible. My neighbor, who used to run a video store, came over, popped in a standard VHS instead of the S-VHS tape I was testing with, and the picture was perfect. Has anyone else run into compatibility issues like that with late-model VCRs?

Remember trying to plug a USB into the wall outlet? Same energy. Tech moves fast and our brains just lag behind sometimes. My grandma still calls every game console a Nintendo. It's that kind of mix-up, just with older gear. Makes for a funny story though.
