Just had a chat with an old radio guy that changed how I look at caps

Ran into a retired ham radio operator at the dump last Tuesday. He saw me tossing a 1980s Sony receiver and asked why. I said the tuner drifted so bad I figured it was toast. He laughed and said I probably just had dried out electrolytic caps, not a dead radio. Said he's fixed dozens of units from that era with a $20 cap kit and a soldering iron. I pulled that Sony back out of the pile and I'm ordering parts tonight. Anyone else had an old timer talk you out of trashing something?
