Grandpa watched me recap a monitor and laughed for 5 minutes straight

I was fixing a 1984 Commodore 1702 monitor last weekend and my grandpa came over to watch. He said "you know the solder joints are supposed to look like little cones right? not like you sneezed on the board." Turns out I had been using the wrong tip temperature for 2 years and my soldering looked terrible. Anyone else get roasted by an old timer and realize you been doing basic stuff wrong the whole time?

... I mean is it really that big of a deal though? Like yeah your solder joints should look nice and cone shaped but if the thing works who really cares? I've been using a $15 iron from harbor freight for like 5 years and my joints look like melted gum. Grandpa would probably have a heart attack if he saw my work but the stuff still turns on and runs fine. Seems like one of those things where old timers get hung up on cosmetic stuff that doesn't actually matter in the real world.

@grant_palmer bet your grandpa would still use it as a paperweight though.
