That one repair guy at the antique mall who called me out on my fix
I was at the Brass Armadillo in Omaha last month trying to haggle on a beat-up Pentax K1000 and a older gent (maybe 70?) just walked over and said "that tape job is gonna ruin the mirror hinge." He showed me how the electrical tape I used was actually pulling the foam off the light seals and making everything worse. Has anyone else had a random stranger totally change how they approach a diy camera repair?

Electrical tape on a mirror hinge? Man, that's a rookie move I would have never thought twice about either. The foam pulling off the light seals is the kind of slow death you don't notice until your negatives come back with foggy edges. That old guy probably saved you from ruining that camera completely. Did he give you any tips on what to use instead?

Tape on camera parts is like using duct tape on a leaky pipe - it seems clever until a professional walks by and sighs. That old timer probably saved your Pentax from a slow death by seal rot. Next time tell him you'll stick to gaffer tape, the one thing that actually comes off without ruining everything.
