That argument about fixing a dented lens hood versus buying a new one

I was at a camera swap meet in Portland last fall and watched two guys go at it over a beat up Pentax lens. One said you can fix a dented hood with a wooden dowel and some patience, the other swore it's a waste of time because the threads are always warped. The first guy pulled out his own lens he'd fixed and showed how light didn't flare on it at all. The second guy pointed out the hood had a crack near the base and said replacement is the only real fix. They asked me what I thought, and I just shrugged because I'd never tried either method. I ended up buying a different lens from a third vendor and still think about that debate. Has anyone here actually fixed a dented hood on an older lens and had it work out fine?

A wooden dowel? That's insane - I'd be terrified of splitting the whole thing.

Yeah I'd rather risk a crack than lose a finger to that thing.
