Talked to a college kid with a digital camera, made me look at my F2 differently
My nephew came over last weekend and saw my old Nikon F2 sitting on the shelf with a stuck shutter. He asked why I bother fixing it when a cheap digital camera gets better shots in half the time. At first I got a little defensive, but then he said, 'You like the fixing part more than the photos, don't you?' and honestly that hit me. He was right. I spent 4 hours last month just cleaning the mirror box and adjusting the film pressure plate, and I enjoyed that more than any roll I've developed. It made me realize I'm less about the final print and more about the ritual of bringing something back from the dead. Have you ever had a young person say something that made you question your whole reason for shooting film? Or is it just me? Maybe I should just frame the camera and call it art, ha.
