Soaking negs in water vs using photo-flo - is one actually better or is it all superstition?

Ive been developing at home for about 2 years now and I keep hearing two DIFFERENT things. One group says plain distilled water with a drop of dish soap works just as good as photo-flo for drying without spots. The other says you are RUINING your negatives if you dont use the real stuff. I washed some rolls last week with just distilled water and they dried fine. No spots or streaks. My buddy in Chicago swears by photo-flo and says I'm asking for residue problems down the road. Who's got real experience with this long term? Like 5 years down the line does it even matter?

long term" matters way more for stain removal than drying agents if you ever switch developers down the road.

Wait what. Did you say LONG TERM mattering more for stain removal? That sounds backwards to me. I always thought drying agents were the whole point. Like if you don't dry right your fabric gets wrecked and stains set in deeper. Guess I been doing it wrong this whole time. My towels always come out rough and stained still. Might have to rethink my whole process now.
