Shoutout to the 5 minute water soak that saved my squeaky Nikon FM2
Bought a beat up FM2 with a scratchy film advance last month and almost paid $60 for a CLA before a guy at the camera shop in Portland said to just dry fire it a bunch and put a drop of lighter fluid on the gear. Did that twice and the squeak is gone. Anyone else got a cheap trick like that for a sticky shutter?

Lighter fluid on the gear is a solid old school trick, the naptha in it cuts through old dried grease without melting the plastic parts like some stronger stuff will. For a sticky shutter you can try the same idea but be way more careful since the blades are thin and easy to bend. A few drops of naphtha on a shutter that's capping or dragging sometimes frees it up, then dry fire it a bunch at every speed to work it in. Just keep it away from the curtains on cloth shutter cameras or you'll ruin them. Honestly the best cheap fix is just exercising the thing, these old mechanical bodies hate sitting around unused.
