PSA: paid $14 for a 'fix all' negative cleaning pen and it left streaks on two rolls from 2019
Finally got my dad's old Canon AE-1 shutter unstuck with a $3 bottle of lighter fluid and a Q-tip after two days of tinkering, but I'm still scrubbing pen marks off frame 12, so has anyone found a safe liquid for emulsion scratches that won't eat the coating?
What exactly are you seeing on frame 12, is it actual pen ink soaked into the emulsion or just surface gunk on the glossy side? That matters a lot because anything wet enough to lift ink out of the gel layer will usually take some of the coating with it. Lighter fluid on a Q-tip is fine for shutters but keep it far away from film, it will wreck the base. If the marks are on the base side you can try a barely damp cloth with distilled water and a drop of dish soap, then rinse and dry fast. If they got into the emulsion itself, honestly you may be stuck with it, because every "safe" solvent people name tends to fog or soften the coating on old rolls.
