Old timer told me to stop using alcohol on negatives, I should have listened

I was cleaning some scratched negatives from the 1970s and a guy at the camera swap meet in Portland said to use Kodak Film Cleaner instead of isopropyl alcohol. I figured he was just trying to sell me something, so I kept using the alcohol. Three weeks later the emulsion started lifting off in patches on my best set of family portraits. Now I have to rescan everything with the damage visible. Has anyone else ruined negatives by ignoring good advice on cleaning solutions?

That's the thing about getting older, you start to realize most of the good advice people give you is learned from mistakes they already made. I've learned that lesson the hard way more times than I care to count, usually with things way less permanent than old negatives.
