LCD on my Canon AE-1 bled out, found the fix cost more than the camera
Picked up a Canon AE-1 at a swap meet in Portland for $60, worked fine until the LCD display started leaking black goo last month. Turns out that specific repair runs about $120 at most shops, which is more than the camera is worth. I ended up finding a guy in Ohio who does it for $85 shipped, but I had to mail it across the country and wait 3 weeks. Anyone else dealt with this or just bite the bullet and use a phone light meter instead?
Been there with the AE-1 LCD bleed and yeah, that repair cost stings when the body was cheap to begin with. A cheap light meter app on your phone works fine in a pinch, but the meter inside the AE-1 reads through the lens, so you'll lose that if you go that route. If you already shipped it off, just ride it out, the Ohio guy is doing the same job the big shops do for less.
