Heat vs. freeze for stuck lens rings, freeze won after 2 tries

I spent a full week trying to loosen a stubborn focus ring on my old Pentax 6x7 lens. Hit it with a hair dryer for 15 minutes twice, no movement at all. Then I tossed the whole lens in a ziploc bag and left it in the freezer overnight. Came out next morning, put a drop of lighter fluid on the seam, and it turned with just a firm grip. Went back to my Instagram film group and they all swear by heat, but range of motion returned instantly after freezing. Maybe the cold shrinks the metal enough to break the old grease bond. Has anyone else reversed the usual trick like that on a stuck barrel?
