My darkroom timer died mid-roll 2 weeks ago and a $6 kitchen timer saved the batch
Two weeks ago in my little basement setup here in Boise, my old GraLab timer just quit on me halfway through developing a roll of HP5 that had some shots of my niece's birthday on it. I panicked for a second, then ran upstairs and grabbed the cheap digital kitchen timer my wife keeps for baking, the kind with the loud beep. I poured the developer, hit start, and just watched it like a hawk, agitating every 30 seconds by counting in my head instead of relying on the timer click. It worked fine, negatives came out clean, maybe even a touch better because I was paying closer attention the whole time. Now I'm wondering if I even need to fix the old one or just stick with the kitchen timer. Has anyone else ditched their fancy darkroom timer for something dumb and cheap, and did you end up going back?
