Met an old timer at the darkroom who taught me about film flatness

Last Tuesday at the community darkroom in Portland, this guy named Dave saw me struggling with fuzzy edges on my 4x5 prints. He showed me how he uses a piece of ANR glass inside the film holder to keep the negative perfectly flat against the pressure plate. I had been blaming my lens for soft corners for 6 months and it was just uneven film tension. Anyone else had a random stranger fix a problem you thought was gear related?

Honestly, Ngl, I had some random dude at a camera swap meet save me from six months of thinking my shutter was stuck because I forgot to take the dark slide out. Felt like a real genius that day. Tbh, Dave sounds like a legend. I bet he also knows how to load a film reel without it turning into a tangled disaster, which is basically a superpower.

Oh man, are we really calling a piece of glass a life-changing revelation now... I had ANR glass in my holders for years and it honestly just added another thing to dust off every session. Isn't uneven film tension just part of the 4x5 experience we're all supposed to embrace...
